I live in China and spend most of my free time testing the routes, apps and payment setups that visitors actually use. This site is the notes I wish someone had given me before my first trip — practical, honest, and dated so you know how current it is.

What this site is

A practical guide, not a brochure. Every page answers a real question a visitor has — how to pay, how to get from Beijing to Xi’an, whether your hotel will accept you — and the answers come from using the routes, apps and payment systems described. Where a fact is time-sensitive, the page is dated and the official source is linked.

Editorial standards

  • One named writer. Pages are written and reviewed by Muxiaoxin; there is no anonymous content farm behind the site.
  • Official sources first. Visa, entry, tax, customs, rail and hotel-registration facts are checked against government or first-party sources, not other blogs.
  • Dated, not timeless. Time-sensitive pages carry a “last reviewed” date. When a policy has an expiry date, the page says so.
  • No paid placement. No hotel, tour, app or booking platform pays to be recommended. No affiliate booking links are used at the time of this review.
  • Corrections are public. If something is wrong, send the page URL by email or WhatsApp. Confirmed factual errors are corrected and noted in the update log below.
  • Uncertainty is labelled. Prices, schedules and opening hours are marked approximate; requirements that vary by nationality or region are described as such.

How facts are checked

Entry rules are checked against the National Immigration Administration and embassy notices. Rail guidance is checked against China Railway 12306. Hotel registration is checked against public security notices and municipal guidance. Tax refunds and customs allowances are checked against the State Taxation Administration and General Administration of Customs. Tibet permit guidance is checked against licensed agencies and current traveller reports, because the rules are administrative rather than published in one stable place.

The site does not claim to replace official sources. Policies change with little notice, and a page dated October 23, 2026 can still be out of date by the time you fly. The date is there so you can judge how much to trust it.

What this site is not

There are no sponsored listings, no fake ratings, and no invented statistics. When a number appears — a train time, a price, a policy — it is either checked, linked to its source, or explicitly flagged as an estimate. Nothing here is legal or immigration advice; for your own case, confirm with the relevant authority or embassy.

Update log

  • 23 October 2026 — full-site review. Corrected the visa-free country list (UK and Canada included; US and India excluded), the 240-hour transit rules, Hainan’s 61-country scheme, hotel registration rules, 12306 booking and the tax-refund threshold. Added arrival, first-trip, budget, safety, allergy, accessibility, LGBTQ, nightlife, altitude, Hong Kong/Macau, Xinjiang and customs guides.
  • October 2026 — itinerary review. Added per-day transport, booking and cost notes; fixed unrealistic rail legs in the Panorama and Silk Road routes; added honest alternatives and pre-booking order.
  • 2026 — first edition. The original destination, month, traveller and itinerary pages.

Current review date: October 23, 2026. Official sources are linked at the foot of each time-sensitive guide.

  • Whether a specific route works for parents, kids or a first visit
