China’s tropical south: resort beaches, duty-free shopping and the Hainan visa-free zone. Honest advice on seasons, typhoons and who should skip it entirely.

Why Sanya
Sanya is where China goes for tropical beaches — a resort city on Hainan island’s southern tip with real palm trees, warm winters and a developed hotel scene. It is not a backpacker beach or a hidden gem; it is a comfortable, family-friendly resort destination where winter sunshine is the product. That makes it a great end to a China trip — or an easy skip if you already live near the ocean.
Seasons, honestly
The dry season (November–April) is the reason to come: 25–30°C days, low rain and the sea at its clearest. Prices peak in January–February, when half of cold China has the same idea. May to October is the rainy season — hot, humid, with typhoon warnings that can close ferries and flights for a day or two. If your dates are August, this page becomes a beach day gamble; go north instead.
Where to stay
Yalong Bay is the classic resort strip: the calmest water and the most polished hotels, a bit isolated. Haitang Bay is newer, deeper-pockets, and next to the duty-free mall. Sanya Bay is the city beach — cheapest, near the airport, but the water is murkier and the strip is busier. Families default to Yalong; couples who want a pool and silence take Haitang; backpackers tolerate Sanya Bay.
What to do
The beaches are the point, and the best day trip is Wuzhizhou Island — clearer water and reef snorkeling (decent, not world-class — manage expectations). Nanshan Temple and its 108 m Guanyin statue make a half-day culture stop; the rainforest parks inland are sweaty but genuinely green. Nightlife is thin by beach-town standards; the resort restaurants and the duty-free mall are the evening economy.
Getting there
Fly into Sanya Phoenix airport or into Haikou and take the island’s ring high-speed rail south (about 1.5–2 hours Haikou–Sanya). The train line links the whole coast, which makes multi-stop Hainan trips easy. Taxis and DiDi cover the bays; distances between the three main bays are 20–40 minutes, so pick a hotel in the bay you actually want to stay in.
Practical notes
Hainan runs its own 30-day visa-free entry scheme for 61 countries — including the US, UK and Canada, but not India. The fine print matters: stays must be within Hainan, and details shift, so check the current rules on our visa page before building a trip around it. Sunburn is the other risk — the latitude is tropical and winter sun still burns. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and confirm ferry and flight status during typhoon season before committing to tight connections.
