Chinese Holidays 2026

The 2026 Chinese holiday calendar and what each date means for travel — Spring Festival, Golden Week and the smaller festivals, plus how to route around them.

Last reviewed October 23, 2026 · policies change — confirm the official sources before travel

Chinese holidays decide what your trip feels like. The two mega-holidays turn the whole transport system into a national event; the smaller festivals are mostly delightful. Here is the 2026 calendar, checked against the State Council notice, and what each date means for a foreign visitor.

Key points

New Year: January 1–3 — a domestic long weekend; book early
Spring Festival: February 15–23 (Chinese New Year is February 17) — the world’s largest human migration
Qingming: April 4–6 — tomb-sweeping weekend; parks and cemeteries fill up
Labor Day: May 1–5 — the second mega-holiday; avoid intercity travel
Dragon Boat: June 19–21 — races and zongzi; a compact three-day surge
Mid-Autumn: September 25–27 — mooncakes, then National Day Golden Week October 1–7 (make-up workdays September 20 and October 10)

What works in practice

1

Book intercity trains the moment they go on sale (usually about two weeks ahead) for any golden-week travel

2

Travel INTO a big city during Spring Festival, not between cities — the cities empty out and the hometowns fill

3

Hotels in tourist towns can triple for the mega-holidays — check these dates before locking your itinerary

4

The pleasant ones: Mid-Autumn is a food holiday and Dragon Boat has genuine races — enjoy these on purpose

5

Make-up workdays (September 20, October 10) are normal working days — sights are quieter, which is useful to know

6

2026 quirk: Mid-Autumn falls right before National Day, so late September is busier than usual — book that window early

Mistakes to avoid

Booking flights and hotels but not trains — trains are where golden weeks actually break

Planning a Great Wall or West Lake day on October 2 — expect the year’s maximum queues

Assuming shops close like Western holidays — malls stay open; small family restaurants close during Spring Festival

Treating festival week as lost time — staying put in one city during Spring Festival is a genuinely memorable experience

Frequently asked

When exactly is Chinese New Year 2026?

February 17, with the public holiday running February 15–23. Expect the busiest travel days just before the 15th and just after the 23rd.

Are attractions open during the holidays?

Mostly yes, at peak capacity. Some museums close on the actual festival day — check each site’s notice the week before.

Do I need to book everything ahead?

For the golden weeks, yes — trains above all. Outside holiday windows, a week ahead is plenty for almost everything.

What about 2027?

The dates shift every year with the lunar calendar. Book first, and re-check this page or the official State Council notice before finalizing 2027 plans.
