China in September
September is the calm before October’s storm — mild weather, thin crowds, and a small Mid-Autumn festival to enjoy rather than endure.

What China is like in September
September is the month of the year I would pick for a first China trip. The brutal heat breaks in the first half, the southern rains taper off, and the skies over Beijing turn that autumn blue. School is back, so domestic family travel drops sharply. The only wrinkle is the Mid-Autumn Festival (September 25–27 in 2026) — a three-day holiday that is mostly a pleasant food event — and the shadow of Golden Week, which begins October 1. Come early in the month and you get the best travel weather in China with ordinary-season prices.
Where to go this month
Beijing in September is the classic — clear light, comfortable days, and the parks at their greenest before the autumn colors. Guilin and Yangshuo come back online as the rains recede: the Li River is still full, and the heat is manageable. Hangzhou settles into its golden season around West Lake. Pingyao and the northern old towns are warm and empty. The mountains (Huangshan, Zhangjiajie) are still summer-moody early in the month but improve every week.
The Mid-Autumn festival, enjoyed properly
Mid-Autumn is the nicest of the Chinese holidays: mooncakes everywhere, families gathering, and evening moon-viewing that turns parks and lakesides festive. The 2026 dates (September 25–27) fall right before National Day, so the two holidays link into an extended peak — book the festival weekend early, and consider leaving China before October 1 unless you want the Golden Week experience on purpose. Mooncakes: buy one from a bakery rather than a gift box; the good ones are made fresh.
Packing and practical notes
One light jacket and normal autumn clothes — September is the easiest packing month. Southern typhoon season is tailing off but not gone: check forecasts for coastal legs through mid-September. The classic September mistake is ending a trip on October 1–2 and trying to fly home from a major city — domestic airports, trains and highways peak that day. If your trip overlaps Golden Week, either leave before it or read our holiday guide and plan around it deliberately.
