Beijing 3-Day First Trip
A realistic three-day Beijing route for first-timers: the Forbidden City, Mutianyu Great Wall and one calm neighborhood day without rushing the city.

Who this suits
First-time visitors with only a long weekend or a stopover. It keeps the absolute essentials and avoids pretending Beijing can be “done” in 48 hours.
What it costs
¥3,500–5,500 per person, including two nights of mid-range hotel, tickets, food and local transport. International flights excluded.
Book in this order
- 1Book the Forbidden City up to seven days ahead; morning slots are better than afternoon ones.
- 2Arrange your Mutianyu transfer the night before. The Wall is the least flexible part of a short Beijing trip.
- 3Keep day one light if you land after noon — do not try to force the Summer Palace into a 3-day version.
Day by day
- 1
Forbidden City and Jingshan
Start with the one sight Beijing does not forgive you for skipping. Do the palace in the morning, go up Jingshan for the full view, and keep the evening for hutongs around Gulou or Dongsi.
- Sleep
- Beijing (Dongcheng)
- Getting around
- Airport express or DiDi into Dongcheng/Qianmen, 45–60 minutes.
- Book
- Hotel only; save the Wall booking for day two.
- Daily cost
- ¥350–600 (excl. hotel)
- 2
Mutianyu Great Wall
Give the Wall its own day. Mutianyu is the best balance of views, cable-car ease and manageable crowds for a short first trip.
- Sleep
- Beijing (Dongcheng)
- Getting around
- Metro to Tian’anmen East, then short walks between palace gates and Jingshan.
- Book
- Timed Forbidden City entry, seven days ahead.
- Daily cost
- ¥400–700 (excl. hotel)
- 3
Temple of Heaven or Summer Palace, then departure
Choose one last big city sight rather than trying to squeeze both in. Temple of Heaven is easier on a departure day; the Summer Palace deserves more time if you have it.
- Sleep
- Departure or one more night
- Getting around
- Private car or DiDi to Mutianyu, about 1.5 hours each way.
- Book
- Arrange the driver the night before; buy cable-car tickets at the base.
- Daily cost
- ¥500–800 (excl. hotel)
If the plan does not fit
Swap the Wall for the Summer Palace
If you have already seen a major wall section or want less travel time, replace Mutianyu with the Summer Palace and keep the trip fully inside the city.
Add one more day
A fourth day is where Beijing starts to breathe: add the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven or a 798 half day instead of rushing day three.
