Who this suits
Travellers slotting Xi’an between Beijing and Shanghai, or anyone who wants the Terracotta Army without staying long enough to over-plan the city.
What it costs
¥2,500–4,500 per person, including one or two nights of mid-range hotel, tickets, food and local transport. Long-distance travel excluded.
Book in this order
- 1Reserve the Terracotta Army several days ahead; the best morning times go first.
- 2Shaanxi History Museum is free but timed. If you cannot get a slot, use the City Wall and pagoda area instead.
- 3Stay inside the City Wall to cut transfers and keep your evening food options simple.
Day by day
- 1
Terracotta Army, City Wall and Muslim Quarter
Go out early for the Terracotta Army, return to the old city in the afternoon, then ride or walk the City Wall before eating your way through the Muslim Quarter.
- Sleep
- Xi’an (Bell Tower)
- Getting around
- Metro or DiDi into the old city; walk the wall at sunset.
- Book
- Terracotta Army ticket for the next morning.
- Daily cost

- 2
Shaanxi History Museum and Big Wild Goose Pagoda
Use the morning for the museum if you got a reservation. After lunch, keep it simple with the pagoda district and a calm exit from the city.
- Sleep
- Xi’an (Bell Tower)
- Getting around
- DiDi or bus 306 to the Terracotta Army, about an hour each way.
- Book
- Timed Terracotta ticket; leave by 08:00.
- Daily cost
- ¥500–800 (excl. hotel)
If the plan does not fit
Skip the museum on a very short stop
If you only have one night, keep the Terracotta Army, City Wall and Muslim Quarter. The museum is excellent, but it is the easiest cut.
Add a third day for Mount Hua
A third day makes room for Mount Hua or Luoyang. Do not attempt either as a half-day add-on to a 2-day Xi’an stop.
