China in November
November is the discount month with real scenery — golden ginkgo, red maples in the south, and the year’s lowest hotel prices in the north.

What China is like in November
November is the quiet achiever. The golden autumn colors move south through the month — ginkgo avenues in Beijing and Xi’an early on, maples and plane trees in Nanjing, Hangzhou and Suzhou through mid-month. There are no national holidays in November 2026, domestic travel is in a lull, and hotels in the north drop to their cheapest rates of the year. The trade-off is the cold: by late November, Beijing nights go below freezing and the first snows arrive in the northeast.
Where to go this month
Hangzhou and Suzhou own late November — the gardens and lake paths under red maples are the classic images of Jiangnan autumn, and the crowds from Golden Week are long gone. Guilin settles into its dry, clear season; the rice terraces are harvested but the river light is at its best. Beijing’s early-November ginkgo avenues (around the temples) are worth planning a day around. The south — Sanya, Guangzhou — is entering its own peak, dry and mild while the north freezes.
The value argument
November may be the best budget month in China: flights drop after the October surge, northern hotels price at winter rates while the weather is still autumn, and attractions are uncrowded enough that timed tickets stop mattering. The only place this logic fails is the far south, where November is the start of peak season — Sanya prices rise through the month. If you are flexible and cold-tolerant, this is when a China trip costs the least and delivers the most.
Packing and practical notes
The season layers again: a warm mid-layer, a jacket for evenings, and a hat for windy northern days. Northern indoor heating switches on mid-November in most cities — rooms get warm, and the air gets dry, so lip balm and hand cream earn their space. Southern cities keep mild weather into December. And if your November plans include Harbin or anywhere northeast, you are already in snow-possible territory — check forecasts before booking outdoor-heavy days.
