China in December
December in China: winter festivals switch on, the south stays mild, and the weeks before New Year are the last quiet window of the year.

What China is like in December
December is a two-speed country. The north commits to winter — Harbin’s Ice and Snow World usually opens late in the month, Beijing averages around freezing, and the northeast is in deep snow. The south shrugs: Sanya sits in the mid-20s, Yunnan’s towns are sunny and mild by day, and Shanghai merely feels like European autumn. No national holidays fall in December 2026, and the pre-Christmas weeks are among the quietest of the year before New Year and Spring Festival travel build.
Where to go this month
Harbin is the obvious answer — the ice festival season begins late December, and the city is built for winter spectacle. Sanya and Hainan start their peak season: warm, dry and increasingly expensive through the month. Yunnan is the underrated December pick — Dali and Lijiang get dry, sunny days with cold nights, and the crowds are modest. Shanghai decks itself in commercial Christmas and is pleasant to walk. Beijing is cheap and museum-friendly, but count on freezing mornings and occasional smog days.
Christmas in China, honestly
Christmas is not a public holiday in China — offices and schools run normally. What you get instead is decoration: malls and city centers light up hard, hotel buffets sell out, and the commercial season peaks. If you are traveling over Christmas, book festive dinners early and expect normal working-day logistics. New Year’s Eve in big cities is lively, and the January 1–3 holiday (2026) means a short travel surge right after — book that weekend ahead if you are still around.
Packing and practical notes
North: the full winter system — thermal layers, windproof outer, insulated boots, hat and gloves; expect indoor overheating and dry air. South: a light jacket and layers for cool evenings. If Harbin is in your plan, buy hand warmers there and keep phones in inner pockets. And be deliberate about dates: the final week of December is calm, but January 1 starts a national holiday weekend — transport prices and demand jump right after.
