China in April
April might be China’s single best month to visit — mild weather nearly everywhere, with one holiday weekend to plan around (Qingming, April 4–6).

What China is like in April
April is the month Chinese guides call “suitable everywhere”, and for once the cliché holds. Beijing sits in the teens to low 20s with the willows out; Shanghai and Hangzhou are green and mild; Guilin warms up before the summer rains arrive. The only structural complication is Qingming (April 4–6, 2026): a three-day holiday where families sweep tombs and everyone else hits the parks. Around those three days, everything runs on mid-season pricing and normal crowds.
Where to go this month
The mountains are at their spring best: Huangshan with new greenery and cloud seas, Zhangjiajie before the summer storms, and the Yangtze gorges clearing after winter fog. Beijing’s parks — Jingshan, the Summer Palace — peak in April. Chengdu is warm and the panda bases are active in the cool mornings. The one southern caveat is rain: Guilin and Yunnan start their wetter cycle late in the month, so schedule river trips early in your stay.
The Qingming weekend, honestly
Qingming weekend is not Golden Week — but it is a real domestic surge: popular parks, tombs-to-tourist-town trains and blossom sites all peak on April 4–6. The smart play is to arrive before it, stay put in one city through the weekend (museum days, neighborhood walks), and move again after the 6th. The weather in mid-April is often the best of the spring — clear, mild, and with the last of the blossoms in the north.
Packing and practical notes
A light jacket and one waterproof layer cover April. Southern rain comes in short bursts, so a compact umbrella beats rescheduling. Book mountain cable-car tickets and Beijing’s Forbidden City timed tickets ahead — April weekend slots sell out. And if you are chasing peonies in Luoyang or rapeseed flowers in the countryside, late April is their window; go on weekdays and rent a car or driver, because the fields are far from train stations.
