China in May
May 1–5 is a national stampede; the remaining three weeks are some of China’s best travel weather. How to use that split to your advantage.

The two different Mays
May contains two opposite travel realities. The first five days are the Labor Day holiday — one of China’s “golden” mega-holidays, with the entire country traveling at once and every famous sight at capacity. After May 5, the crowds vanish almost overnight, and what remains is arguably the best ordinary-season window of the year: warm, green, pre-rainy-season in most of the country, with long days and shoulder prices. Plan your trip around the second half.
Where to go this month
Zhangjiajie in mid-May is at its most reliable — the pillars green, the summer storms not yet arrived. Huangshan is green and less crowded than April. Yunnan finishes its dry season with strong sun and clear lake days. Guilin and the Li River are lush before the rains peak in June. Beijing is already hot by late May, but the first half of the month still works. The far south (Sanya, Guangzhou) turns genuinely hot and humid — by late May the tropics are for beach-only trips.
Surviving the Labor Day window
If your dates force you into May 1–5: pick one city, stay there, and pre-book everything — trains sell out, hotels triple, and same-day tickets at major sights are not a thing. The holiday is also when you see the difference between famous sites and everything else: the Forbidden City will be brutal while ordinary neighborhoods, parks and small towns stay calm. If you have never seen a Chinese mega-holiday, it is a spectacle of its own — just do not schedule three transfers across it.
Packing and practical notes
T-shirts, one light layer and rain gear for the south. Sun protection matters more now — the sun strengthens fast in May. Midges and mosquitoes start in the south; a small repellent is worth the space. If you want to ride the Li River or climb a famous mountain in late May, morning slots beat afternoon heat. And double-check hotel air conditioning when booking — May nights can be warmer than you expect, and older guesthouses may not have it.
